Opole University of Technology and the Academies of Physical Education in Gdańsk and Katowice are the only three universities from Poland that have been included in the prestigious Shanghai Ranking of universities conducting scientific research in the field of sports, the world’s most important ranking in sports science.

Opole University of Technology has once again become the first university in the region to be included in the prestigious global ranking of universities conducting scientific research. This time, it is in the Shanghai Ranking for universities conducting research in the field of physical culture sciences: the 2023 Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments. The ranking presents the best sports universities in the world or universities with units related to sports.

I have had the honor of leading the university scientifically for over 4.5 years. During this time, we have placed a strong emphasis on scientific quality, and it has paid off. The results are best seen in the largest, most objective rankings,” – informs Professor Grzegorz Królczyk, Vice-Rector for Science and Development at Opole University of Technology.

This is very good news for our faculty, which conducts research at a world-class level. We have established the only laboratory in Europe, and the second in the world, for the simulation and research of ankle sprains, where scientists study the pathomechanisms behind the development of chronic ankle instability on a specially designed treadmill. Additionally, our scientists were the first in Europe to start in-person rehabilitation for people who had COVID-19, and they have also been working on patient rehabilitation using virtual reality technology,” enumerates Professor Dawid Bączkowicz, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Physiotherapy at Opole University of Technology.

Our faculty is referred to as the heart of active Opole. The common denominator of all the programs we offer at the faculty — physiotherapy, physical education, tourism, sport and safety, and our newest program: physical activity and health coach—is physical activity,” emphasizes Professor Dawid Bączkowicz.
